Gravitational Scattering
We review some modern applications of the theory of fewbody encounters between binaries and single stars. In particular we focus on the treatment of adiabatic encounters, in a regime which is of importance in encounters between a star and a planetary system in a star cluster.
متن کاملThought experiments on gravitational forces
Large contributions to the near closure of the Universe and to the acceleration of its expansion are due to the gravitation of components of the stress–energy tensor other than its mass density. To familiarize astronomers with the gravitation of these components we conduct thought experiments on gravity, analogous to the real experiments that our forebears conducted on electricity. By analogy t...
متن کاملK−p scattering length from scattering experiments
The strong Kp scattering length is extracted within chiral SU(3) unitary approaches from a very large variety of fits to low-energy Kp scattering data. Very good overall agreement with available scattering data is obtained and the resulting scattering length is compared with the new accurate kaonic hydrogen data from DEAR. The pole structures of the obtained fits to experiment are critically ex...
متن کاملGravitational Wave Experiments and Early Universe Cosmology
Gravitational-wave experiments with interferometers and with resonant masses can search for stochastic backgrounds of gravitational waves of cosmological origin. We review both experimental and theoretical aspects of the search for these backgrounds. We give a pedagogical derivation of the various relations that characterize the response of a detector to a stochastic background. We discuss the ...
متن کاملEnhanced gravitational scattering from large extra dimensions
We show that enhanced gravitational scattering on small scales (< 0.1mm), which becomes possible in models with large extra dimensions, can establish statistical equilibrium between different particle species in the early Universe. Ultra-light WIMPs (e.g., axions) can be thermalized by such a mechanism and therefore are not viable CDM candidates in models with a fundamental Planck scale below a...
